By Phinashia Page, Hida RPA It's November! The month for stuffing our faces, decorating for the winter holidays, and realizing our planning systems could probably do with a bit of an update. Or is that last one just me? Whether I'm alone in that last point or not, I'd like to share how I use my planner as an ALT. I personally use the Bullet Journal system (you can learn more about it at the official website here) as a planner, but I hope that you can find at least one idea to help you stay organized and on top of things. I keep a record of all of my vacation days and which classes I am scheduled to visit on my monthly and future views. Everything else ALT-specific can be split into 3 major categories: Class-Related, Professional Development, and Personal. Class-Related This category includes anything that helps me keep class-related information in one location. I mainly keep lists of materials to make for class, activities I may be able to use, and anything related to planning and preparing for classes. Big projects, like preparation for holiday-themed activities and classes, get their own sections. I also keep basic information (phone number, class schedule, class size, etc.) for each school I work at and kindergarten I visit; having the class sizes written down really helps when I'm making materials. Professional Development Anything that has the potential to make me a better ALT or helps me gain skills that are useful belongs here. The 4 most recent SDCs each have their own section of notes. The TEFL course I took also has a couple of dedicated pages. I also include things like notes on how to teach numbers, grammar points I wanted to look up, and notes from ALT meetings. Personal This is the place for anything that's not directly related to being an ALT, but still has a bit of a tie-in. The two types of planning that belong here are studying for the JLPT (countdowns, study logs, etc.) and time-tracking. The JLPT study logs help me remember what I studied and when. I did the time tracking for a few months, and I think it really helped me see where I was spending my time and set weekly goals to better manage my time. Currently, I only track the amount of time I spend studying. Thanks for sticking around until the end! I hope you were able to find something that you can use in your own planning system.

Simply being suspected of having a ghost writer would be terrible, but to be marked with the crime of the murder of said figure, Soseki's good name looks as though it will be forever ruined. With the trial date set for tomorrow, Ryunosuke Naruhodo has resolved to prove his innocence. At the same time, Holmes has received a commission for a case which has brought him to Meiji Mura. The request reads "I want you to find the proof that it was Natsume Soseki who murdered me." Yes, the one who sent the commission is presumed to be dead. Holmes has accepted the case and is seeking definitive evidence of Soseki's guilt. Naruhodo and Holmes will certainly cross paths. Can Naruhodo prove Soseki's innocence? Is there a single truth lying at the end of their two separate paths? Note: The game is all in Japanese, so if you want to practice your Japanese it is a good chance. If you're still early into Japanese studying, the JETs participating will be doing their best to translate, so you can still join! Please RSVP via Facebook or by contacting an AJET officer by October 13th! Thank you! By Meryl J., ALT PA It is time to fall in love with fall (unoriginal and over-used? Come at me, bro, I am a poet).
Japan might not have Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Lattes (I am still very devastated about this) but in all honesty, autumn is one of the best times to be in Japan. I highly recommend checking out some of the delicious fall foods (秋の味覚 - あきのみかく) famous in Gifu: -Persimmons (柿: かき): A delicious fruit that is famous particularly in Motosu city -Chestnuts (栗: くり or マロン): There are a variety of chestnut foods, both sweet and savory available at this time. In paricular, Mino city and the Tono region are famous for their kurikinton (栗きんとん), a boiled chestnut sweet. Some other Japanese fall foods include: -Matsutake Mushroom (松茸) Soup -Roasted Sweet Potatoes (焼き芋: やきいも) -Ginko Nuts (銀杏: ぎんなん) -Samna Fish (秋刀魚) Between meals, make sure to plan some trips to see the autumn leaves' colors (紅葉: こうよう or もみじ)and hunt for those red leaves. Kouyou begins in early October and goes through early December. I can promise you, the Instagram pictures are a fabulous excuse to get out and explore Japan. Plus, be real, who doesn't love to frolick in beautiful leaves? You can download our list of leaf-viewing spots and the best times to head to each city in our seasonal guide found here: http://gifujets.weebly.com/gifu-guides.html Happy Fall-ing! |
