Hida Region
Once its own province, Hida is the northernmost of Gifu’s 5 regions. The first kanji in Hida, 飛, means ‘to fly,’ and its second kanji, 騨, means 'dappled gray horse.’ It is located amidst the Japanese Alps, and is famous for its beautiful nature, winter sports, hot springs, traditional woodwork crafts, and traditional, well-preserved historical architecture. In terms of its climate, the Hida region has long, snowy winters and humid summers with very brief spring and fall seasons. Food from Hida is also famous, including nationally recognized Hida beef, high-quality soba noodles, and local dishes such as hoba miso (miso cooked atop a magnolia leaf).
