Kumamoto JET US Tax Guide
- China - up to three years
- Ireland, Korea, Germany, Philippines, and France, etc. - up to two years
ALTs from the following countries are not eligible for tax exemption in Japan: U.S., U.K., Australia, Canada, Jamaica, Singapore, Trinidad and Tobago, New Zealand, Barbados, South Africa, etc.
Based on income of previous calendar year (January to December)
- 10% (4% prefecture tax and 6% municipal tax)
- Covers you for the current fiscal year (April to March)
- This means that for ALTs with no tax exemption, you will pay less taxes on your first contract and pay more on your second contract as the tax liabilities are calculated from the previous calendar year's income (January-December).
- ALTs who are exempted for the first two years will pay less taxes on their third contract and more taxes on their fourth and final contracts.

- Between 5,000-8,000 yen
